Method to find the murder capitals of Virginia
We wanted to use something other than speculation and opinion to determine which cities in a state are the most dangerous, so we looked at surveys and public polls. Instead, we used Saturday Night Science to compare the actual numbers from the FBI’s most recent report. We specifically examined the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, which provides a yearly summary of the number of murders in each city.
We examined all the cities in Virginia that had available FBI data for the most recent FBI Crime In The United States report. We were left with 31 cities to rank. We used the number of murders per person as the basis for ranking. Petersburg has the highest number of murders per person according to the latest data. We have ranked the places in Virginia with the highest number of murders per person for the tenth time. The list for 2024 has been updated.
