Method to Determine The Cities In Pennsylvania With The Largest Black Population
We continue to have faith in the reliability of data, particularly from the Census. We went there to get the race breakdown across Pennsylvania. The most recent data available is from the 2018-2022 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census.
We specifically examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories as defined by the Census:
- Hispanic or Latino
- White alone*
- Black or African American alone*
- American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
- Asian alone*
- Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
- Some other race alone*
- Two or more races*
The specific column we were interested in was the count of individuals who identified themselves as Black or African American. We focused our analysis on non-CDPs in Pennsylvania that have a population of more than 5,000 people. We were left with a total of 184 cities.
Next, we determined the proportion of residents who identify as Black or African American. The percentages range from 86.4% to 0.0%.
