Nashville Man Charged with Federal Firearms Violation After Shooting at Police Officer

The Middle District of Tennessee U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that a man who opened fire on a Metro Nashville police officer is now charged with federal firearms. While on probation for prior felony charges, the individual, identified as Knykholas Lane of Nashville, age 21, engaged in an escalation of alleged criminal activities.

Officers identified Lane as the possible culprit on November 19, following a citizen’s report of a man trying to break into a house on Lewis Street. Lane then fled on foot, according to the complaint, and officers discovered he was carrying a weapon during the pursuit. Lane turned the firearm toward an officer and fired a shot in defiance of orders to stop. A Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol used in the shooting was recovered after the officer retaliated with shot and struck Lane twice, leaving the guy hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following Lane’s altercation with Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) officers, it was discovered that he had outstanding arrest warrants for counts of false imprisonment and domestic violence. “One of our top priorities is to apprehend armed criminals who endanger our community,” Acting U.S. Attorney Jaworski told reporters. “When those individuals put not just citizens but also our police officers in danger, we will act swiftly to hold offenders accountable.”

If found guilty of the federal firearms offense, Lane may face severe penalties, up to 15 years in federal prison. The problem of maintaining public safety while dealing with those who have been involved in the legal system and have experienced armed violence is deeply intertwined with the incident that transpired. These charges are the result of a joint investigation by the MNPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua A. Kurtzman will pursue the prosecution.
