Early Tuesday morning in Nashville’s Napier neighborhood, a man was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting. The Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed that 21-year-old Knykholas Lane was injured during an exchange of gunfire with a police officer. According toWSMV, the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. after officers responded to a call about Lane attempting to forcibly enter his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on Lewis Street.
After an unspecified woman alerted the authorities, police were already familiar with both the suspect and the location due to a prior altercation on November 14, which involved Lane allegedly punching the woman and holding her against her will, detailed in theNewsChannel5report. On arrival, police spotted Lane fleeing the scene, which led to a foot chase and ultimately Lane firing a weapon. An officer, identified as Eric Ziegler, a three-year MNPD veteran, returned fire, striking Lane in the leg and buttocks.
Lane was then taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for his injuries. He was already facing charges related to a previous incident involving domestic assault and false imprisonment. “The victim took out an order of protection but he has since been in the wind,” MNPD spokesman Don Aaron said, as recounted by theTennessean.
As part of the protocol, Lane’s confrontation with law enforcement has prompted an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). During the time of the TBI’s inquiry into the shooting, Officer Ziegler has been placed on routine administrative assignment. Lane has a record of criminal activity prior to this event, including a conviction for two counts of aggravated burglary in March 2023 and a subsequent arrest on November 12 for violating his probation, incidents that add further context to the current situation.
