Navajo Nation Expands Economic Frontier with Land Trust Acquisition near Flagstaff

According to the Navajo Nation Office of the President, President Buu Nygren signed a warranty deed to put the land near U.S. Highway 89 near Flagstaff into trust, which is a big step for the Navajo Nation and will help the community’s economy in the future. This event, which is the first of its kind since 2016, demonstrates the Navajo Nation’s unwavering dedication to using its resources for development and progress.

“Part of the federal government’s obligations to provide support for Navajos in Arizona who were forcibly relocated by the federal government through the 1974 Settlement Act,” according to the Navajo Nation Office of the President, President Nygren said during the signing ceremony for the warranty deed, emphasizing the federal government’s continued duty to assist Navajo people displaced under the 1974 Settlement Act.

On the purchased land, the Navajo Nation intends to work with the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise (NNGE) to build a gaming facility. This project is expected to generate significant economic benefits and around 100 new jobs. “Rents collected by the Navajo Nation through leasing to NNGE will go directly to the Din Relocatee Fund to support relocated Navajos under the Settlement Act,” stated President Nygren, according to the Navajo Nation’s Office. As evidenced by the fact that 85% of NNGE employees are Navajo and another 5% are from other tribal areas, the strategy places a strong emphasis on long-term job prospects for Navajo people.
