MADISON, Wis – The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced significant milestones and initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and accessibility in 2024. With a focus on innovation and customer service, the DMV has implemented new programs, processed millions of transactions, and introduced services designed to meet the needs of diverse populations across the state.
Key Achievements in 2024
In 2024, the Wisconsin DMV conducted nearly 2.3 million transactions through its 80 Customer Service Centers, with millions more completed online. Significant accomplishments include:
- 922,374 vehicle registrations and titles.
- 928,163 driver licenses and IDs issued, renewed, or replaced.
- 288,340 knowledge tests administered to new drivers.
- 110,746 skills tests conducted by DMV driving examiners.
- 240,970 customer inquiries answered via email.
“As a state agency, it’s our responsibility to meet the diverse needs of our customers. We’ve added many innovative and self-service options that are convenient and easy to use,” DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler said. “Behind this customer-service focus is the work of our DMV team members across the state. Their dedication allows us to deliver timely, accurate, and professional assistance that sets an industry standard for DMV service.”
Innovations and New Initiatives
Driver Education Grant Program
One of the DMV’s flagship initiatives this year is the allocation of $6 million to Wisconsin’s new Driver Education Grant Program. The program provides free driver training courses to nearly 10,000 low-income students, ensuring greater access to essential driver education.
Interactive Training Tools
The DMV also launched an interactive map to help new drivers locate nearby training schools easily.
EV/Hybrid Stickers
In compliance with new legislation, the DMV issued 168,000 stickers for electric and hybrid vehicles. Replacement stickers can now be ordered online for added convenience.
Emergency Contact Database
To enhance safety, the DMV added emergency contact information to more than 50,000 records, enabling law enforcement to notify loved ones promptly in emergencies.
Additional Highlights
- Specialty License Plates: Three new designs—Spay and Neuter, Suicide Prevention, and Crane Foundation—have been added, bringing the total to 66 specialty plates.
- Centralized Emissions Testing: Two new facilities opened in Milwaukee to streamline vehicle emissions testing.
- Updated Motorists’ Handbook: The revised handbook now offers clearer, more accessible driver information for Wisconsin residents.
