Nearly 80 Million Americans to Embark on Thanksgiving Travel, Texas Sees Notable Increase

There will be a spike in holiday travel as Thanksgiving approaches. Nearly 80 million Americans are preparing to travel this holiday season, according to AAA’s travel estimate, which was reported by CBS Austin. Families and individuals alike are solidifying plans to get together and express gratitude as the holiday spirit takes hold, even if it means navigating congested airports and holiday traffic.

There has been a noticeable rise in wanderlust in the state of Texas. According to CBS News Texas, an estimated 5.7 million Texans want to travel at least 50 miles from their homes during the Thanksgiving holiday. This estimate is 2.4% greater than pre-pandemic travel and represents a 1.3% increase over previous year’s numbers. In Texas, popular destinations include San Antonio, Austin, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex; out-of-state destinations include the Caribbean and Orlando; and the most popular overseas destination is Rome, Italy.

AAA Texas anticipates handling over 29,400 support calls during this period to handle the surge of tourists. They advise those who are driving to make sure their car maintenance is current and to make sure their tires and batteries are in good shape. Additionally, Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 1 to 7 p.m. is anticipated to be the most crowded period to drive, with travel times estimated to be 38% longer than normal.

Preparation is essential for individuals who will be flying. AAA recommends arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights because airports will be packed with passengers. For self-drivers, it’s also advised to make a parking reservation at the airport. When planning their return trips, visitors should be especially mindful of the fact that the late afternoon and evening hours of Monday, December 2 are expected to see the most traffic on I-45 between Galveston and Houston.
