Nevada Officials Urge Drivers to Heed ‘Move Over’ Laws During National Crash Responder Safety Week

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Nevada State Police (NSP) are encouraging drivers to slow down and shift over when they see flashing lights ahead in order to increase safety for both drivers and first responders. This reminder is in line with National Crash Responder Safety Week, which is taking place from yesterday through Friday and aims to increase public awareness of the risks that emergency responders, police officers, and roadside personnel face. According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, 45 responders were killed in the previous year.

As Colonel Conmay of the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol put it, “The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division is committed to keeping our roadways safe for all, including motorists and those who are working along our roadways.” According to a statement from the Nevada Department of Transportation, he asked drivers to slow down and make room for road workers.

Nevada law mandates that when drivers approach stopped vehicles with flashing lights, including both public and private cars, they must slow down, exercise caution, and, if at all possible, change lanes. In order to avoid more accidents, drivers who are engaged in minor collisions must move their cars out of traffic. Additionally, drivers are reminded by the Nevada Department of Transportation to maintain their cars, buckle up, refrain from driving while intoxicated or distracted, and maintain a safe following distance.

In order to remove traffic obstructions more quickly and safely, emergency responders and law enforcement in Nevada collaborate through traffic incident management (TIM) coalitions. Over 225 first responders will receive specialized traffic incident safety training in 2024, and 79% of the state’s road incident responders have already received training this year. Better coordination and safety are guaranteed by this cooperative effort. Additional information is available at NVtim.com.
