New Bedford Repeat Offender Caught with Drugs and Firearm After High-Speed Chase

In a high-speed drama on the streets of New Bedford, a repeat offender with a GPS monitoring device has been nabbed once more, this time with a sizeable stash of drugs and a firearm, the City of New Bedford Police Department reported on their official social media channels. Hayden Andrade, a 22-year-old resident of South Dartmouth, is back in the headlines after detectives from the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau engaged in a vehicular chase that escalated into a full-blown pursuit through the city.

Details provided by theCity of New Bedford Police Departmentstate that Andrade tried to ditch a loaded handgun out of his vehicle’s window amidst the chase. Pursuing officers were able to recover the tossed weapon later. Andrade, whose bid to avoid capture included a foot chase, was finally arrested at the intersection of Brock Avenue and Emery Street. Upon apprehension, he was found to be in possession of 18 grams of fentanyl and 42 grams of cocaine, in addition to the firearm he had jettisoned earlier.

This is not Andrade’s first tangle with law enforcement. His rap sheet extends back to an arrest in February of 2023 for cocaine dealing, followed by a series of restraints that came with bail and finally a GPS anklet an attempt at oversight that clearly fell short of its purpose. After his previous capture for illegal firearm possession and drug charges while out on bail, Andrade’s return to the streets has once again been cut short by vigilant detectives.

New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira did not mince words when condemning the failure of the local judicial system to constrain a repeat offender’s movements. “It is unfortunate that, yet again, I have to inform the public that we have re-arrested an individual who had no business being on the street,” Oliveira stated. “The decision at New Bedford District Court to release him after his felony arrest in April of 2023 while out on bail was a significant error in judgment.” He further urged the New Bedford District Court judges to prioritize public safety in their rulings, as per theCity of New Bedford Police Department.
