New Detroit drop-in center aims to help homeless residents

(CBS DETROIT)The weather is growing colder and the winter months are drawing near. This implies that more homeless people will be looking for housing.

A new drop-in location is one of the resources available in Detroit that can assist.

A warehouse that is 11,000 square feet in size is undergoing renovations to become a drop-in facility for homeless people.

William White, a case manager with Cass Community Social Services, stated, “It’s going to impact a lot of people who just sit in their cars and don’t have the money to keep the car running while they warm up during the day,” because it’s becoming available so quickly.

After everything is finished, there will be a living room, a dining area for meals, six shower-equipped bathrooms, a laundry room, and an office.

“They’ll sleep in a different structure. The executive director of Cass Community Social Services, Rev. Faith Fowler, stated, “This is really so they have space to spread out and handle, you know, tasks of daily living during the daytime and then sleep somewhere else.”

The program will operate for a year and a half thanks to a $3.5 million grant from the city of Detroit.

“Not only run the program but to run it the right way, to have mental health workers, to have physical doctors, to have case managers for housing, you know, to have all the resources here,” added Fowler.

Advocates claim that many shelters are full or beyond capacity and that the number of homeless persons has only increased in the past two years.

“I’ve witnessed folks who are victims of domestic abuse enter shelters right away. However, I’ve also witnessed people wait up to nearly a month for a bed to become available,” White added.

The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries 24-hour hotline is another new program.

“We will send a van within the city of Detroit if someone does not have transportation to come to a shelter,” stated Chad Audi, CEO of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. “We also have a twenty-four-hour phone line that is answered by a live person 24 hours a day.”

Additionally, the shelter has added 100 extra beds to its capacity.

People can enter a safe space with the aid of all these services and resources.

On December 16th, the new drop-in location will open.

You can contact 313-993-4700 until Monday, when Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries will reveal a dedicated number for the round-the-clock hotline.
