New Diverging Diamond Interchange to Open Monday on I-77 in Huntersville, N.C.

This week, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will complete the conversion of the Interstate 77 Gilead Road intersection into a diverging diamond arrangement, which will affect traffic patterns for both residents and travelers in Huntersville. The Charlotte Observer reports that the ongoing road construction, which started Thursday evening, will last through the weekend and be finished early on Monday.

According to WBTV, starting at 9 p.m. on Thursday, left turns at the crossroads of U.S. 21 and Gilead Road will be prohibited as part of the first phase. If a driver wants to turn left, they will be directed to a U-turn bulb. All roads should reopen late Sunday evening or early Monday morning to make up for the shutdown.

The $30.8 million project will close Gilead Road between Reese Boulevard and U.S. 21 starting at 9 p.m. Friday, with an emphasis on increased safety and more efficient traffic flow. According to QC News, this closure will be in place to make it easier to paint appropriate stripes, lane markings, and road signs that match the diverging diamond design.

Drivers may expect to need additional time to adjust to the altered traffic pattern as the new interchange will be operational by 6 a.m. on Monday. According to statistics cited in QC News, the NCDOT makes sure that these interchanges have achieved an average 37% decrease in crashes since they were built. Officers will be positioned strategically to assist in managing traffic flow during this time to lessen the possibility of delays.

More advancements in this field are anticipated in the future. U.S. 21 will be widened from Gilead Road to Holly Point Drive as part of a different NCDOT project; right-of-way purchases are anticipated to begin in 2028. It is anticipated that this project will improve connection and manage the higher amount of vehicles brought on by Huntersville’s expansion.
