New Jersey Teacher Faces Serious Charges After Allegedly Having Child With 13-year-old Student

DDN – A high school teacher is facing a series of terrible accusations after it was reported that she had a child with a 13-year-old boy, according to New Jersey officials.

Laura Caron, 34, a 5th-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School, has been charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and second-degree endangerment to a child’s welfare, according to a press release from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.

The child is accused of being mistreated between the ages of 11 and 15 while living with Caron in her South Jersey home.

Investigators suspect Caron created an abusive sexual relationship with her pupil while teaching him and his sibling in fifth grade, according to ABC Philadelphia.

But this became even more distressing in 2019 when the victim was 13 years old and began living with Caron, who was then 28. Authorities suspect that during this interaction, the educator became pregnant with the teen’s child.

According to investigators, the case first gained attention on social media when the victim’s father publicly stated on Facebook in December 2024 that his son and Caron’s 5-year-old child bore an uncanny resemblance.

Caron, who grew up in Warrington Township on the outskirts of Philadelphia, was a college basketball star at Cabrini University, a once-prominent Catholic institution that was absorbed by Villanova in 2024. Her major was elementary education.

The accused victim’s family got acquainted with Caron and began allowing their children to stay with her weekly, but this gradually developed to their children living permanently with the suspect from 2016 to 2020, according to court documents obtained by ABC Philadelphia.

The victims’ brothers told police that their brother began sharing the same bed with Caron when he was 11 years old and that they witnessed instances of secretive conduct and sexual assault in the home, according to officials.

The abused child allegedly told his sister via text that he had been abused by Caron, and that he had fathered a child. He reiterated this in a police interview. Caron and the victim reportedly remained in contact until his father made the Facebook announcement last month.

The Middle Township Police Department, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Special Victims Unit arrested Caron “without incident” on Wednesday, according to the news statement.

Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland stated Caron’s charges, saying, “This arrest demonstrates our office’s and law enforcement partners’ unwavering commitment to protecting children in our community.”

“Teachers have a high level of trust, and the claims in this instance are a highly concerning violation of that trust. “We will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served and to support the victim and their family throughout this process.”

Caron is now being imprisoned at the Cape May County Correctional Facility, awaiting her first court appearance.

If convicted of aggravated sexual assault, she may face a sentence of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, with an additional five to 10 years for the other two accusations.

Police stated that the Middle Township School District had been alerted and was cooperating with officials; counseling and support services are currently being provided to students, staff, and families who may have been affected by the news.
