New Orleans Enforces Downtown Street Closures Amid Safety Concerns from Plaza Tower’s Falling Debris

Falling rubble from the Plaza Tower has forced the closure of downtown roadways in New Orleans. According to WDSU, Howard Avenue between Rampart Street and Loyola Avenue is closed, as is the right lane of Loyola Avenue between Howard and Julia Streets.

Because of the adjoining building’s declining state, closures have been put in place as a safety precaution. “This closure is due to safety precautions related to the deteriorating condition of an adjacent building,” someone confirmed in a recent statement. WWLTV said that the closures would stay in effect until the area is deemed safe by city officials and repairs are finished.

Because of the closure, traffic that typically travels on Howard Avenue is being diverted to O’Keefe Avenue. Barricades, barrels, and signs have been erected by city officials to aid traffic in navigating the diversion. Officials are asking cars to heed detour signs and barriers while the area is still sealed off. According to FOX 8 Live, the outcome of further evaluations and repairs to the Plaza Tower will determine when the roadways will be reopened.
