New Victim Assistance Center to Open in Swain County, NC for Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

As Hurricane Helene’s impact lingers in North Carolina, Swain County residents are getting some relief. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has announced plans for a new Victim Assistance Center (VAC) to support the storm-affected community. The goal is to inform those in need of help during the recovery process.

The VAC will open on Friday at the Swain County Technology Center, 45 E. Ridge Drive, Bryson City, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will offer support to storm victims and is part of a growing network of VACs across Western North Carolina, including some that have already opened and others planned for later dates. Victims are encouraged to visit the center for help with insurance claims and other recovery needs.

In a statement obtained by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Causey asserts, “The Department of Insurance will continue to host events to help with insurance claims and other needs.” Trumpeting a message of commitment, the statement reveals a coalition of local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, rescue squads, civic groups, charities, and churches banding together, working hand in glove, to uplift and support those who’ve found themselves in Hurricane Helene’s cruel wake.

Another VAC will be available for residents at the Columbus Library, 1289 W. Mills St., on Tuesday. Additional help will be offered at the Mountains Branch Library, 150 Bills Creek Road, in Lake Lure, on November 14. Both centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist with recovery efforts during this difficult time.
