New WorkSource Center in Watts, Los Angeles, Promises Economic Growth and Career Opportunities for Residents

The City of Los Angeles, in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), recently opened doors to the new Watts Los Angeles WorkSource Center, aiming to broaden economic opportunities for its residents. According to a press release by theLos Angeles Mayor’s Office, this WorkSource Center is unique as HACLA is the only public housing agency across the nation to run a certified, full-service center of its kind.

Located at 2212 E. Imperial Highway, this facility stretches across 9,000 square feet and features an active computer lab, business center, as well as large training rooms. It is strategically sited on HACLA-owned property beside a Salvation Army-operated 100-bed Bridge Housing site, creating a synergy designed to seamlessly connect transitioning individuals to essential job resources. The center operates from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, with variable hours on Saturday to accommodate diverse schedules.

Mayor Karen Bass expressed the city’s commitment,stating, “We are committed to helping Angelenos connect to new career pathways and access life-changing opportunities.” The declaration reinforces the fact that this initiative is not a temporary fix but an “investment in the economic future of L.A.” Boosting career development, employment, and training opportunities, the center represents a beacon of hope for many, gearing to serve over 1,600 clients annually.

HACLA’s Chief Development Officer Jenny Scanlin noted the historical significance of the center, originating in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising. “HACLA is proud of the thirty-two year history of its Watts/LA WorkSource Center which was started intentionally by the great Mayor Tom Bradley after the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising to address the grave inequities in economic opportunity,” Scanlin told theMayor’s Office.

The expanded resources and services now include job training and career development, alongside youth employment programs in collaboration with the City’s HIRE LA Youth Employment Program and the County’s Youth@Work initiative. Carolyn Hull, EWDD General Manager, lauded HACLA’s ongoing efforts andenvisions the WorkSource Center to”assist local Angelenos impacted by job insecurity get enrolled into training and support services so they can get on a path to gaining access to employment in industries that will offer financial security and career advancement.”
