New Year’s Day Tragedy on I-96 Triple-car Crash Claims One Life, Injures Five

A triple-car incident on I-96 early on New Year’s Day killed one woman and badly injured five others.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is not ruling out alcohol as a part in the fatal incident that occurred when a vehicle rear-ended another parked on I-96 and was hit head-on by a third vehicle.

A 57-year-old Fenton lady was riding in the backseat of a 2016 Ford Explorer when it rear-ended a stopped Chevrolet Trax on westbound I-96 in Lyon Township.

It was located approximately east of the South Hill Road overpass.

The Trax was stopped in the second lane of the freeway, with its hazard lights on. It’s unknown why the 30-year-old Ypsilanti guy stopped his automobile.

Following the collision with the Trax, the Explorer turned about and ended up facing east in the westbound lane of the highway.

A 2018 Jeep Compass then slammed the Explorer head on, killing the Fenton woman.

The Explorer’s driver and front-seat passenger are both seriously injured, while the Jeep’s 75-year-old driver is in critical condition in the hospital.

So is the 82-year-old husband of the Fenton woman who was murdered. It’s unknown whether the Fenton woman was wearing a seatbelt.

Meanwhile, the Trax driver was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. A blood draw was performed on them, and the results are pending.

The inquiry is being conducted by the sheriff’s crash reconstruction section.
