There is a business in the Hudson Valley of New York state that opened almost 100 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed.
It’s not surprising that a historic establishment would be in New York, since the original 13 colonies were formed on the east coast. As someone who grew up in Accord, NY, I’m proud to say that one of the oldest buildings in the country is located in Ulster County, where I’m from. Additionally, the oldest business in the state is located near my childhood home.

Saunderskill Farms in Accord, NY is the State’s Oldest Business
Saunderskill Farms is the oldest continuously operating business in New York state. It was given to the Schoonmakers in 1663. Many years later, I had the opportunity to attend Rondout Valley High School with one of their descendants. Since 1680, they have been farming the land consistently. They have received a special honour, the tricentennial award, which is rare for businesses.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Saunderskill Farms has been in operation for 56 years and is one of the longest-running businesses in the country. They started farming in 1638, and currently, the longest-running family-run business is Shirley Plantation in Virginia.
