Sunday Daniel Ganyo, a Nigerian, was found guilty of participating in a cyber fraud operation that targeted American companies and was given a seven-year prison sentence. The 84-month sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ganyo was also mandated to make restitution totaling about $2.8 million.
The court was informed that Ganyo was in charge of a system in which officials from big businesses were impersonated using fictitious email addresses. This deceived vendors and technology providers into shipping items that were subsequently routed to South Africa. When FBI agents intercepted a fictitious order worth over $400,000, the fraud was discovered. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, they used a tracking device to follow the cargo to Ganyo’s warehouse in South Africa.
Before his scheme was uncovered, Ganyo managed to get more than $2.3 million of the approximately $8 million worth of products he attempted to steal. He was extradited to the United States in July 2023 after being detained in South Africa in January 2021. He entered a guilty plea to the charges in November 2023. After completing his sentence, Ganyo will be extradited to Nigeria and held until he is transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. The U.S. Justice Department and South African officials worked together to secure his detention and extradition. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher J. Nassar and Thomas Buscemi prosecuted the case, and the FBI carried out the investigation. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, restitution was determined at $2,829,878.40 to make up for the monetary damages brought on by the fraud.
