No Freeway Closures in Phoenix Area This Weekend but Lane Restrictions on State Route 51 and Loop 101

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has stated that there will be no freeway closures for construction projects during November 22–25, which is a relief for drivers who want to travel through the Phoenix area this coming weekend. But there are some obstacles in the way. Lane limitations will be implemented on certain sections as lane markings and pavement upkeep become more important.

Between Bell Road and Shea Boulevard, State Route 51 will shrink to one lane overnight for drivers heading south. This restriction will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. starting tomorrow through Tuesday night (November 24-26), as perADOT s advisory. Drivers are being advised by officials to use caution and allow additional time for travel while the pavement is being maintained.

The West Valley will also see a shortening of the northbound and southbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway). From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. tomorrow through Tuesday, the freeway will occasionally be limited to three lanes between McDowell and Thunderbird roads. It is anticipated that the lane marking operations planned for this route would cause traffic to slow down. When approaching the work zones, drivers are advised to slow down, merge safely, and follow any instructions given by law police and on-scene work teams.

Despite being predetermined, these schedules are susceptible to unanticipated events or the vagaries of the weather. ADOT ensures that these improvements are a part of the larger Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County, largely funded by Proposition 400 a sales tax initiative passed in 2004 by county voters. ADOT provides real-time roadway condition updates through the az511 mobile app, their Arizona Traveler Information website at az511.gov, and by phoning 511.
