Some Social Security recipients, especially those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), will notice a shift in their payment schedule as September draws near. Because September 1st falls on a Sunday, SSI users previously received their September payment on August 30.
This change is the consequence of a planned revision. The Social Security Income (SSI) program was created to assist low-income Americans with limited resources who are blind, disabled, or over 65.
Approximately 7.4 million individuals received these benefits in July 2024, with an average monthly payout of $696.
Modifications
SSI benefits are typically disbursed on the first of the month. On the other hand, the payment is made on the business day before if the first falls on a weekend or holiday.
Since September 1 occurs on a Sunday in 2024, the Social Security Administration (SSA) rescheduled the payment for that month to Friday, August 30. Beneficiaries should be informed of this small alteration so there is no uncertainty about their September payment.
There will be additional changes to the timetable in December 2024 and January 2025. The payment will be made on Friday, November 29, as December 1 falls on a Sunday. Like January 1, which is a holiday, the payment is due on December 31.
The Schedule
On September 3, 2024, Social Security payments will continue as usual for those who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits, or for those who started receiving benefits prior to May 1997.
The payment plan for the remainder of us is based on your birthdate:
- October 1st to September 10th birthdates: September 11th payment
- Date of birth between September 11 and September 20: September 18 payment
- Date of birth between the 21st and the 31st: September 25th payment
Based on their birthdate, these planned payment dates guarantee that beneficiaries receive their Social Security benefits on time.

Applications for SSI
The Social Security Administration is improving the SSI application procedure in addition to altering the payout schedule. A new online SSI application will be available to some candidates starting in December 2024.
The improved application will first be accessible to first-time, single applicants between the ages of 18 and 65. By late 2025, SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley says that the long-term goal is to make this expedited application procedure available to all applicants.
This is a big step forward because the application procedure as it exists now is frequently criticized for being too drawn out and difficult. The SSA wants to make things easier for applicants while still giving them the respect they deserve from a quicker and more accessible application process.

Amounts
Your specific circumstances, including age, work history, contributions, and, in the case of SSI, income and resources, will determine the amount you get from Social Security. The average Social Security payouts by program are broken down as follows:

|
Retirement Benefits | $1,900 |
Age 62: $2,710; Age 67: $3,822; Age 70: $4,873
|

Although these are average amounts, each person may receive a different amount depending on their unique eligibility requirements.
