Norman Fire Department Receives Over $10K from Dickey’s Foundation for Critical Protective Equipment

The Dickey Foundation recently awarded a donation of over $10,000 to the Norman Fire Department. According to the City of Norman, the funding will be used to buy new helmets for first responders, enhancing safety in scenarios involving active threats.

Important people, including Laura Rea Dickey, CEO of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, Betsy Orton, executive director of the Foundation, and Gary Snider, owner of the Norman franchise, came at Fire Station 7 on Monday to celebrate a grant award. Orton recalled a terrible incident in 2016 when a shooter targeted Dallas police officers, as reported by the City of Norman, and emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to helping front-line workers. Orton remarked, “At that point,” to which Mrs. Dickey replied, “Not again on my watch.”

“You’re first in the front lines,” Laura Rea Dickey said, expressing her support for local heroes. This is our tiny way of saying “thank you” for taking care of us. As the City of Norman noted, she underlined the significance of expressing gratitude to those who put their life in danger for public safety.

In high-risk scenarios, emergency personnel will have extra protection thanks to the new Safariland Tactical Helmets. Police, firefighters, and emergency medical services can enter and offer immediate care once a threat has been neutralized, which speeds up the stabilization and evacuation of patients, according to Assistant Chief Chad Roney. “This gear allows us to go safely into these warm zones and get those victims out as fast as possible,” Roney stated. Darrel Pyle, the city manager of Norman, also emphasized the significance of the award, stating that it helps not only the Fire Department but also the community at large and affiliated organizations. According to the City of Norman, because vital departments have limited resources, funding from groups like the Dickey’s Foundation enable them to acquire equipment that would otherwise be unaffordable.
