Norman Parks & Recreation Triumphs with Top Awards at Oklahoma Conference

At the Oklahoma Recreation and Park Society 2024 Conference, which was hosted at the Embassy Suites and Young Family Athletic Center, the City of Norman’s Parks & Recreation Department was presented with two awards. The City of Norman reports that the department won the Oklahoma Recreation and Park Society Maintenance Rodeo title for the second consecutive year and received the Award of Excellence for Project or Facility.

The city got the opportunity to present the recently finished Young Family Athletic Center, which is a component of the Norman Forward projects, after a two-day conference on November 7 and 8. Jason Olsen, the park director, said, “About 140 municipal Parks and Recreation officials were here and this conference allowed us to show off our finished Norman Forward projects including the Young Family Athletic Center to our Park professional peers around the state and the country,” according to the Norman City Council.

The 122,000-square-foot Young Family Athletic Center in Norman features eight basketball courts, twelve volleyball courts, eighteen pickleball courts, and aquatic features like a four-lane warm-up pool and an eight-lane, 25-yard competitive pool. In addition, it has a gym, a spectator area, meeting rooms, changing rooms, lounges, professional timing systems, and video screens. The facility is a component of Norman’s initiatives to promote leisure and sports. According to the City of Norman, Roslyn Johnson from the National Parks and Recreation Association delivered the keynote address at a recent conference, which also included a live recording of the Recless podcast.
