North Carolina Governor Cooper Signs Order to Aid Hurricane Helene Victims and Boost Road Safety by Transforming Intersections

Earlier this week, Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order 323 to assist those affected in western North Carolina by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The order specifies that the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will not be collecting certain DMV fees, including late fees, and will also suspend some requirements for both residents and businesses in the impacted regions. License extensions have to also been granted to mechanics and car dealers to help cope with the disruption caused by the natural disaster.

In an effort to potentially improve road safety, transportation authorities across the state are in the process of converting select intersections into all-way stops. Such changes have been shown to significantly reduce both fatalities and injuries by up to 77%, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. These all-way stops are designed to reduce the need for drivers to wait for a safe gap in opposing traffic and are expected to offer more predictability than traditional traffic signals. More detailed information on these changes can be found on theN.C. Department of Transportationdedicated website.

The upcoming week has been designated as “Crash Responder Safety Week” by Governor Cooper. This initiative is a reminder for drivers to practice caution when encountering emergency vehicles with flashing lights. TheNorth Carolina Department of Transportationemphasizes the legal requirement for drivers to either move over or reduce speed significantly, to ensure the safety of first responders attending to incidents on the roads. The press release states that the state has trained over 41,000 traffic incident management responders for this purpose.
