These individuals, now carrying the title of Certified State Government Budget Professionals, are charting a new path in the financial governance of North Carolina.

The program, which is a collaboration between the Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) and the UNC School of Government, was developed by pairing the expertise of experienced budget professionals with UNC faculty members to establish a curriculum that addresses the essentials of state budget management this new initiative is seen as a stepping stone towards setting a benchmark for budgeting excellence in the public sector, State Budget Director Kristin Walker expressed high hopes for the future impact of the program on local governance these certified professionals are expected to bring significant improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of budget management within the state.

Certification is not handed out lightly; those in pursuit must undergo three weeks of intensive training on the Chapel Hill campus of the UNC School of Government, followed by a series of exams to prove their mastery of the material. Karen Barker from the Department of Public Instruction affirmed the program’s high value in a statement obtained by official press release on theNorth Carolina Office of State Budget and Management, citing the professional growth and networking opportunities it afforded, similarly, Gianna Quilici from the North Carolina Department of Administration highlighted how the program provided deeper insights into state legislation and various facets of budget management, including accounting and grants management.
