New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that North Carolina has maintained a notably low nonfatal workplace injury and illness rate for the private industry in 2023, holding steady at 2.0 cases per 100 full-time workers. This figure stands out in comparison to the national rate of 2.4, as reported by the BLS.
In light of this, Chief of Staff Scott Mabry expressed his pride in the achievements of the state, citing the diligence of both employers and employees in fostering safer work environments. He asserted, “I am proud to see the state of North Carolina s injury and illness rate is significantly lower than the national rate,” in a statement obtained by theN.C. Department of Labor. Mabry also accentuated the state’s commitment to “continue to push the importance of safety and health at the workplace to get these injury and illness rates even lower.”
Despite the overall low rates, the statistics for the local government and state government sectors, as well as the private industry construction sector, demonstrate no significant change between 2022 and 2023. Nevertheless, a modest but significant improvement has been noted in the private industry manufacturing sector, with injury and illness rates decreasing from 2.6 to 2.4, as reported by theN.C. Department of Labor.
The Occupational Safety and Health Division of North Carolina, a State-Plan state, is looking to firmly continue its emphasis on monitoring hazardous industries. This will entail providing free safety training and education, conducting free safety and health consultative visits, and establishing partnerships and alliances with industries, to further lower the risks of injuries and illnesses across various working environments.
