North Carolina Teen Coerced by Adoptive Mother to Dismember Brother and Burn His Remains

DDNIn North Carolina, a killer adoptive mother enlisted one of her adoptive daughters to help cover up her own sibling’s murder. Advantage Deven, 63, was charged in June 2024 with two counts of first-degree murder, concealing of death, and felony child abuse, as well as one count of kidnapping, in connection with the murders of Blake and London Deven, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Deven had adopted five children in total, three boys who were biologically linked to one another and two females who were unrelated to either the boys or each other.

Cherish Deven, one of the children, has now revealed the horrible circumstances surrounding her role in her adoptive sibling’s tragic death. In September 2024, NBC station WRAL received a tape of an April 2022 phone call in which someone admitted to assisting in the dismemberment of Blake Deven’s body.

“She had me buy an f—ing trash can, dude, and f—ing keep him in there for a month,” the caller informed the person on the other end of the line. “I had to see his body burn. It’s been on my f—ing mind, and I don’t know what to do.

The recording was first voice-modulated to conceal the identity of the caller, who was never charged with a crime. “She starved him so much that she killed him, and then she didn’t call the ambulance,” the caller claims. “She did not contact the police. She did not try to fabricate a tale to tell them, ‘Oh, he died.'”

However, Cherish has come forward and identified herself as the voice on that scary phone conversation, according to WRAL earlier this week. In a recent interview, she said that when she was 16 or 17, her adoptive mother forced her to dismember her brother.

“She had me buy an f—ing saw to cut his –open and f—ing disintegrate the f—ing body,” Cherish says on the recording. In the interview, WRAL inquired as to how her mother allegedly persuaded her to commit the heinous crime.

“There was no asking,” she explained to WRAL. “It was simply, ‘You do it. You’re taking action. If not, you are going to get in trouble. I’m sitting there as a young youngster, thinking, ‘Oh my God. “What should I do?”

Cherish stated on the initial recording that she was 18 when the incident occurred. There have been no charges brought against her, and she stated that she is unlikely to be charged.

“It wasn’t that I was, like, I wanted to do this on my own,” she said. “Again, I was forced to do it. Detectives are aware of this. Everyone knows this already… It disgusts me that I can live with myself knowing what I’ve seen and done because someone misled me and pushed me to do something as a youngster.”

Investigators suspect Blake, who was last seen alive in 2017 when he was ten years old, was mistreated and starved to the point of death. “We believe he was mentally abused and starved,” Sgt. Jeff Locklear said when the suspect was arrested. “His body could not withstand the inhumane treatment.” Then Avantae devised a strategy to conceal Blake’s remains. She coerced another household member into participating.”

His sibling London was a teenager at the time of her death and had unique needs that required a caregiver, according to investigators. Both of their bodies were found charred inside a barrel.

Cherish and her adoptive mother have never lost love. “I hate you,” she declared. “You told me you were my mother, and that you loved me. You said you would be there for me, but you never were.”
