North Dighton Man Charged with DUI After Swansea Crash

A North Dighton man faces multiple charges following a single-vehicle accident Saturday night that brought the Swansea Police Department to the scene. As released in a statement from the Swansea Police, 67-year-old Gary Silva is charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a red light violation, and a marked lanes violation, as per

Responding to a call about the crash around 8:42 p.m., officers found Silva’s white van in a grassy area by a gas station off Route 118. The vehicle, having crashed behind a Swansea gas station off the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, was seen by officers attempting to reverse back into the parking lot. With the witness’s quick thinking, the van was stopped and the keys removed before the police arrived. No injuries were sustained in the accident, fortunately for everyone involved.

The preliminary investigation uncovered that Silva was driving southbound on Route 118 when his vehicle sped through the red light at the intersection with Route 6 and ploughed into the gas station parking lot before ending up in the wooded area adjacent to the station. It was after attempting to reverse out of the spot that a witness intervened, possibly averting further disaster.

A subsequent inquiry by the police indicated that Silva was under the influence at the time of the crash. “A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the van, identified as SILVA, had been traveling southbound on Route 118 at a high rate of speed,” the

official statement recounted. Silva was taken into custody without resistance by the authorities.
