Northampton Man Arrested and Charged for Allegedly Shooting Woman in Florence Village

A Northampton man is facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting a woman in the stomach, at her home in the Florence village on Sunday morning. The victim was promptly taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, is expected to make a recovery. Upon arriving at the scene, Northampton and state police found the suspect, a 65-year-old male, who surrendered without further incident and was arrested. The man now faces charges including armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon,

Details regarding what led to the shooting remain under investigation, but an element that is not in question is the ripple of distress this incident has cast across the community. The retaliative nature of what should be a stronghold of safety, a person’s home, is now a crime scene—the idyllic suburbia contrasted sharply by an act of violence that is all too familiar in our national dialogue.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is expected to be arraigned in Northampton District Court on Tuesday. In the statement obtained by NBC Boston, the District Attorney’s office confirmed the woman’s anticipation of recovery.
