Northeast Philly’s McKinley Street Wins Top Honors at Clean Block Banquet

Philadelphia’s streets were recognized for their cleanliness as the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) acknowledged the efforts of local residents in the Clean Block Contest. The annual Clean Block Banquet, held last Friday at the IATSE Ballroom, provided a platform for Sanitation Commissioner Crystal Jacobs-Shipman and other officials to celebrate the contributions of community members dedicated to maintaining and improving their neighborhoods.

The contest included 25 competing blocks, judged on resident participation, cleanliness, beautification, and property improvements. The top prize of $1,000 was awarded to 500 McKinley Street in Northeast Philadelphia, with 800 N Bailey Street in Fairmount, 5700 Howard Street in Olney, and 2200 Mascher Street in North Philadelphia placing second, third, and fourth, respectively. The PMBC also used the event to recognize community involvement through several awards. Among the recipients were Jordan Legacki, who won the Junior Block Captain of the Year Award, and Ameen Smith, honored with the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Award for their contributions to the community. The 2200 block of N. Mascher Street received the Neighborhood Transformation Award, recognizing the collective effort in revitalizing the area.

Additionally, two new Commissioner Awards were introduced in honor of Clarena Tolson and Carlton Williams, recognizing their dedicated service to the city. The “Love Where You Live Award” was presented to Block Captain Stephanie Jacobs, who was praised as a leader dedicated to helping others and embodying the principle of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Block Captain Jessie Coriano received the Clean Block Champion Award for her ongoing commitment of time and resources to improve the community, continuing the legacies of both her and the namesakes of the awards, as per the
