NEW YORK (TNND) — A Christmas Day outing turned into a scene of chaos in New York City when a taxi jumped the curb in Herald Square, injuring six pedestrians, according to police.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:03 p.m. as the cab, traveling northbound on Sixth Avenue, veered onto the sidewalk. Authorities say the 58-year-old driver may have suffered a medical episode, though the exact nature of the event remains under investigation.
Three Hospitalized, Including a Child
Of the six pedestrians struck, three were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Among the injured were a 9-year-old boy and two women, ages 41 and 49. The other three pedestrians were treated at the scene.
Two of those hurt are Australian nationals, according to Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs. The department confirmed that consular assistance is being provided but did not disclose further details about their conditions.
Driver Under Evaluation
The driver, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital in stable condition for further medical evaluation. While the New York City Police Department has not disclosed specifics about the suspected medical episode, officials stated that no criminality is suspected at this time.
An NYPD spokesperson noted that the investigation is ongoing to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Holiday Shoppers Shaken
Herald Square, known for its busy streets and holiday shoppers, was bustling with activity when the crash occurred. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with bystanders rushing to assist the injured until emergency responders arrived.
“It was terrifying,” said one witness. “People were screaming and running to help. You don’t expect something like this to happen, especially on Christmas.”
