Oakland County man charged with trafficking 2 women, using drugs to keep them awake

(CBS DETROIT)According to authorities, a Waterford man is charged with seven felonies in relation to the trafficking of two women out of hotels and motels in Metro Detroit.

The 43-year-old Quincy Lamar Bland faces two charges of participating in a human trafficking business that causes harm or commercial sex, two counts of transporting a person for prostitution, two counts of accepting money from prostitution, and one count of manufacturing or delivering less than 50 grams of a controlled substance. Two misdemeanor counts of assault or assault and battery are also against Bland.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office claims that Bland used physical force or threats of physical force to control the ladies and provided them with crack to keep them up and productive for days at a time. According to reports, the women were trafficked from motels and hotels in Waterford and other areas of Metro Detroit.

On November 26, Waterford police took Bland into custody. Police discovered a bag of drugs on Bland that contained heroin, crack, and meth during the arrest. When police searched Bland’s bedroom, they also discovered a lot of cash, two scales, and several smartphones.

“Human traffickers work covertly, taking advantage of weaker victims and manipulating them in a variety of ways, such as by instilling and maintaining drug dependence, violence, and threats of violence. In a statement, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said, “The cases we are seeing right now are just the tip of the iceberg. Human trafficking is a massive problem that requires a massive response.” “I appreciate my office’s Trafficking Unit and the agencies that benefited from the recent training, particularly the work done by the law enforcement authorities in these recent cases. There is still a lot of work to be done, and my office will keep collaborating with law enforcement to combat and prevent human trafficking in Michigan.

On November 27, Bland was arraigned and given a $100,000 bond. On December 10, he is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference.

In the past month, Oakland County has seen two significant human trafficking cases. Prenentice Orr, 41, of Wyoming, Michigan, was charged with three felonies on November 22 after a victim reported that she was being trafficked out of Southfield.
