Following an Allegheny County Health Department health inspection that revealed unappetizing conditions, including mouse droppings throughout the establishment, Oakland’s well-known Pizza Romano has come under fire. Food preparation rooms, places behind freezers, and even cash registers were not immune to the rodent invasion, according to an inspection report that CBS News Pittsburgh highlighted. This is a clear indication of inadequate sanitation standards that could endanger customers.
Following the discovery of 17 infractions, including three high-risk ones, the health agency sent a consumer alert to the pizza on Atwood Street. This warning indicates that the eatery is not adhering to fundamental food safety regulations. In addition to finding “numerous rodents droppings to all parts of the facility,” Audacy said that inspectors also discovered “exposed green bait,” which suggests that an attempt at self-regulated pest management was unsuccessful. During and after the inspection, workers were observed not following glove-change procedures.
High-risk infractions, such as a meat slicer and other equipment discovered to contain old food particles, raised concerns about the pizzeria’s hygiene. Additionally, workers were observed consuming food on surfaces that come into contact with food, violating hygienic regulations intended to safeguard patrons. To quickly identify and resolve such problems, the Allegheny County Health Department monitors over 8,500 food establishments, including eateries and food trucks.
Pizza Romano is still under a consumer alert, according to information posted yesterday afternoon on the health department’s website. With frequent status updates, businesses are typically given an opportunity to correct infractions and pass re-inspection before the alert is lifted. The whole inspection report, which lists the problems discovered and the actions needed to comply and lift the warning, is available to concerned customers on the Health Department’s website.
