The National Weather Service in Oklahoma City has issued a flood advisory until 10:30 AM CST this morning for parts of central Oklahoma, including Cleveland, McClain and Oklahoma counties, due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms sweeping the area. As reported by the
NWS,
“Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected” and has already begun in some areas with minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, with ponding of water becoming imminent or currently happening.
In response to the advisory, local residents are urged to turn around and avoid driving through flooded roads. The
weather service
has emphasized the severity of the situation by stating, “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.” The flood advisory has been extended to include the Little River near Tecumseh and the North Canadian River near Yukon, impacting Seminole, Pottawatomie, Canadian, and Oklahoma counties.
Furthermore, the NWS warns of continued flooding with the North Canadian River near Yukon expected to rise to a crest of 12.6 feet tomorrow morning, just below the flood stage of 14.0 feet. This rise in the river level may lead to shallow overflows which could affect low-lying agricultural lands, suburban areas, oilfield facilities, and local roads, particularly from near Banner Road downstream to the headwaters of Lake Overholser.
Weather conditions are predicted to improve following the weekend with the
NWS
detailed forecast outlining sunny skies and clear nights starting Saturday. The forecast indicates a respite from the rains with daytime highs stabilizing in the 60s and nighttime lows in the mid-40s across the region. This clearing of skies, however, does not immediately diminish the risks posed by the current flooding, and authorities continue to monitor water levels and stand ready to administer aid in flood-impacted zones.
