Wilbert Lamon Rivers, a 26-year-old resident of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, has entered a guilty plea for federal firearm charges, as announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. According to the press release, Rivers faced a single count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The indictment against Rivers stemmed from an incident on November 4, 2023, where he was found with a semiautomatic pistol and forty rounds of ammo despite a prior conviction. This conviction, which was for a crime punishable by more than a year in prison, prohibited him from firearm possession under federal law. The case was brought to light through the combined efforts of the Muscogee (Creek) Lighthorse Police Department, the Okmulgee Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
During the proceedings, the U.S. Magistrate Judge, The Honorable Jason A. Robertson, presided over River’s plea in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Following his guilty plea, Rivers is being held by the United States Marshal Service. A sentencing date remains on hold as the court awaits the completion of a presentence investigation report. Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly was the representative for the prosecution, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
In accordance with the judicial process, the details of River’s previous conviction and the specifics of his sentencing will likely become clearer following the presentence report. Authorities have not shared more details about the case or whether additional charges will be filed.
