ONE-CAR CRASH KILLS ASHFORD MAN, Causes Hours-long Closure of I-84 Exit Ramp and Route 74

DDN – On Monday, police said that an Ashford man died in a crash that stopped an exit ramp off Interstate 84 as well as another route.

According to Connecticut State Police, troopers responded to a one-car crash on Monday afternoon at I-84 East’s Exit 69 off-ramp.

Police identified the driver of a 2000 Honda Civic as Robert E. Bickford, 68, and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to an accident information summary provided Monday evening.

It is unclear why Bickford lost control of the vehicle, according to police, who noted that his car was damaged by numerous traffic control signs and around 20 feet of metal guard rail.

Police reported the off-ramp was closed for the investigation as of 4 p.m. The ramp was reopened at 9 p.m., according to the Department of Transportation’s website.
