With the 2024 election cycle winding down, Orlando and Orange County are making strides to dispose of campaign signs sustainably. In collaboration with the League of Women Voters and local churches, the city has set up collection sites where residents can bring their election signs for recycling from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily until Nov. 17. Prior to dropping them off, all wood and metal frames must be detached from the signs, as reported by My News 13.
According to a release, Orlando aims to dramatically reduce landfill waste by transforming these single-use signs into Enviro-Fuelcubes® through a process handled by NuCycle Energy in Plant City. These cubes can be used by the cement and electrical power industries to partially replace coal partially, thereby reducing carbon emissions. The initiative, which began in 2022, saw 11,140 pounds of campaign signs diverted from the landfill during its first year, and a subsequent event for the primary election earlier this year resulted in over 14,000 single-use election signs being repurposed, as WESH detailed.
Collection sites in Orlando include Orlando Solid Waste, Broadway Methodist Church, First Unitarian Church of Orlando, Porter Transfer Station, Northwest Neighborhood Center, Cady Way Pool, Mead Botanical Garden Community Garden, and Fire Station 64. For those in Seminole County, the Central Transfer Station in Longwood will also accept signs for recycling until Nov. 25.
