Orlando Braces for High Rip Current Risk and Unseasonably Warm Weather

Orlando residents and visitors should brace for weather-related challenges over the weekend and next week. According to the

National Weather Service

Melbourne, FL, there’s a high risk of rip currents starting today, extending through the weekend and possibly into next week.

The forecast spells out continuous above-normal temperatures and highlights Monday as the day with the highest rain chances. The conditions for those hitting the beaches are far from ideal, with increasing east wind flow generating not just the rip currents but rough surf conditions. The gusty winds are expected to be particularly strong along the coast, peaking at 15 mph and higher gusts.

As the NWS Melbourne, FL, mentioned early this morning, a strong high pressure over the Great Lakes will integrate down the eastern seaboard, beefing up those conditions. The otherwise fair weather will come with a caveat—with daytime temperatures hitting the mid-80s in the interior and lower 80s by the coast, overnight lows will hover 10-15 degrees above normal, giving no respite from lingering warmth.

Mariners are not exempt from these cautionary messages, with a Small Craft Advisory issued to take effect this evening and lasting into Sunday. The NWS Melbourne, FL, advises that winds will push to nearly 20 knots as the weekend progresses, building seas to 6 feet offshore Saturday evening and 7-8 feet offshore by Sunday. The service has reported a frontal boundary is forecast to cross the area on Tuesday with north-to Northeast winds of 10-15 knots on and 15-20 knots on, building seas back to 5 FT nearshore and 7 FT offshore.

For aviation, VFR conditions are expected to prevail, with some coastal showers spreading inland after 3 p.m. Winds will also be a factor for flights, with east-southeast gusts up to 20 knots possible today. Travelers are advised to check for updates and plan accordingly.
