Orlando Driver Convicted of Killing Father on His First Day of Work

On Thursday, jurors found a man guilty of murder in the shooting death of a father on his way to work on Colonial Drive in an Orlando road rage incident last year.

Nicholas Carrasquillo was arrested for the shooting death of David Alexzander Sligh, 30, on January 22, 2024. Sligh’s family stated he was slain while driving to his first day of full-time work at his employment.

Prosecutors and his defense made closing statements on Thursday, and the jury convicted him of second-degree murder and shooting into an inhabited vehicle.

Following the incident, Sligh’s vehicle ran off the road in the 4800 block of E. Colonial Drive, colliding with a pole near a Best Buy. Sligh was discovered shot inside and transported to the hospital, where he eventually died.

According to the affidavit, Carrasquillo returned to the area while officers were investigating and was found in the Best Buy parking lot. A witness who remained on the site after calling 911 approached Carrasquillo and enquired whether he witnessed anything, to which the suspect replied that he was the one who shot the victim, police said.

Carrasquillo told police that a white car driven by Sligh cut in front of him, causing him to brake hard and honk his horn and flash his lights, according to an affidavit.

According to authorities, Sligh shouted something to Carrasquillo from his window, and Carrasquillo opened his driver’s door to hear what Sligh was saying because his window does not roll down.

According to the affidavit, Carrasquillo stated that the two were yelling at each other when the light turned green and the white vehicle remained stationary.

The affidavit states that Carrasquillo then reached into his glovebox for his gun, stood partially outside the vehicle, and pointed it at the white vehicle. He shot at the ground close to the car and then fired more shots at the driver, claiming he only wanted to “maim” him.

According to police, six gunshot casings were found. According to authorities, one shot was fired, followed by five gunshots in a matter of seconds, as captured on a nearby security camera.

Carrasquillo said to police he grabbed his revolver because he felt confined, but he never saw Sligh carrying a weapon, according to the affidavit.

“He acknowledged he could have driven around him but feared he would be followed. When asked if this would have happened if he never flashed his bright lights and honked his horn, he stated the white vehicle probably would have driven off,” the affidavit reads.

The sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
