According to the Woodridge Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney, two juveniles are being charged with major offenses following an alleged armed robbery at Woodridge Park. Jordan Jones, 18, of Oswego, and a 16-year-old from Woodridge are charged with a daylight heist in which they allegedly used a BB pistol to seize things from a man they met via Snapchat. Jones faces one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Class X Felony, and one count of Misdemeanor Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, according to the DuPage County News.
When the victim claimed being threatened with what seemed to be a real firearm, local police quickly rushed to the incident, which happened on Sunday at approximately 5:14 p.m. Investigators discovered that it was intended to be a straightforward $495 sale of sweatshirts and AirPods. Rather, it is claimed that the defendants took out a weapon and seized the goods with force. Jones is charged with trying to flee officers in a high-speed chase in a subsequent pursuit, which unavoidably increased the seriousness of his allegations.
Authorities say Jones left the scene during a subsequent traffic stop involving a GMC SUV linked to the suspects and was subsequently taken into custody when the car was being removed. Three BB guns were found after a search warrant was executed on the car thanks to the police’s hard work. The following day, the juvenile, who remained anonymous, turned himself in. Robert Berlin, the DuPage County State’s Attorney, emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the appropriate punishment when he said, “The accusations that these two defendants robbed an innocent man at gunpoint in a public park are outrageous.”
Recognizing this, Woodridge Chief of Police Tom Stefanson praised the efforts of those engaged in the arrest and investigation while reaffirming that such behavior would not be accepted. In order to completely confront and rectify the horrific nature of crimes committed by young people, the juvenile is facing one count of Armed Robbery and one count of Aggravated Robbery. According to the DuPage County news release, both offenders are now in custody and have impending court appearances scheduled. Jones’ arraignment is slated for December 16 and the juvenile’s hearing is scheduled for December 5.
The judicial system upholds both parties’ presumptions of innocence until proven guilty, even after accusations have been brought.
