Following a comprehensive investigation, Otsego Public Schools (OPS) has informed families of a significant data breach that exposed sensitive personal information. According toFOX 17, the district’s notice detailed an attack on its systems around October 19, 2023, and made the unsettling discovery on October 21. Compromised data includes full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial details, among other personal identifiers.
According toFOX 17, the origins of the breach have been traced to an international group that temporarily infiltrated the school’s computer network. Despite the breach’s severity, OPS has stated, “There is no reason to believe anyone s information was or will be used maliciously,” and is taking steps to support those affected by offering credit monitoring services for those whose Social Security numbers were involved.
Additionally, OPS officials have responded proactively, launching a swift investigation with external cybersecurity experts to assess and mitigate the damage. In a statement reported byWOODTV, OPS declared its commitment to data privacy and ongoing efforts to improve its security practices. The findings confirmed that an “unauthorized actor” gained access to private systems, exposing various personal information, though no evidence was found of misuse resulting directly from this incident.
To address the concerns of those impacted, OPS has made a toll-free number available for inquiries about the breach and for individuals to determine their eligibility for complimentary credit monitoring services. This helpline, available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays, can be reached at 855.285.5183.
