We used Saturday Night Science to study the cities in South Carolina that have the highest percentage of households with same-sex couples in 2024. The information is sourced from the American Community Survey 2013-2018 vintage. This survey provides details on gender based on household status. Unfortunately, the Census no longer provides information at the city level. Therefore, this report is based on the most recent available data.
- Ridgeland has the highest rate of same-sex households in South Carolina. 6.39% of households in Ridgeland consist of gay individuals.
- The city in South Carolina with the highest number of households where same-sex couples live is Columbia, with a total of 277 gay households.

About 0.74% of people living in South Carolina identify as gay. So, there are a total of 15,712 households with gay people in The Palmetto State. Our aim with this post is to use Saturday Night Science and data to find out which cities in South Carolina have a higher population of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Method to determine the best cities for same-sex households in South Carolina
We used Saturday Night Science and the 2013-2018 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census to determine the ranking of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in South Carolina. We examined:
- Percentage of all households that are unmarried, same sex partners
We only analyzed non-CDPs that have more than 1,000 households. We assigned a ranking from 1 to 98 to each place based on the percentage of unmarried, same-sex partner households. The city with the highest percentage of these households is considered the most gay.
In the end, it turned out to be the place with the highest percentage of gay households, at 6.39%.
