Method to Determine the Snobbiest Cities in Virginia

We collected a list of all the locations in Virginia that have a population of 5,000 people or more. We ended up with a total of 62 places. Then, we examined each location based on these fancy criteria (And no, it’s not a real word). Someone who is overly proud or elitist about their knowledge or use of the English language.

  • Median household income (Higher is snobbier)
  • Percent of population with a college degree (Higher is snobbier)

The American Community Survey provides information on incomes and levels of college education. Home prices are sourced from Zillow.

This simple criteria turned out to be much more effective at identifying snobby places compared to other snobby criteria such as:

  • Libaries per capita (Higher is snobbier)
  • Museums per capita (Higher is snobbier)

We assigned scores from one to 62 to each of our 62 places in each category. We calculated the average ranking for each place and assigned an overall score.
