Palm Desert Man Charged with Felony Evading and Weapon Possession After High-Speed Chase and Standoff

Earlier this week, chaos erupted on the streets of Indian Wells when a motorcycle deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle clocked at excessive speeds. According to

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department

, the deputy initiated the stop at around 5:26 a.m., at the intersection of Fred Waring Drive and Cook Street. The driver, however, had other plans and took off, leading the deputy on a high-speed pursuit that reached nearly 100 mph, eventually entering the wrong way on Fred Waring Drive at Portola Avenue.

The fleeing individual gave the deputy the slip, disappearing from view. The chase seemed to reach the dead-end until the suspect’s vehicle was found parked in the 44500 block of San Pascual Avenue in Palm Desert. Law enforcement officials then set a perimeter around the residence, demanding the occupants to exit, but they were met with silence. Persistence in this standoff led the deputies to secure a search warrant, after which the residence was breached with aid from the Special Enforcement Bureau, as detailed by the

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department

.

Inside, an intense search ensued. Paul Claudio Piermartiri, a 38-year-old from Palm Desert, was found concealed within a bedroom closet. As per the

department’s report

, Piermartiri resisted but was ultimately arrested with the support of a Sheriff’s K-9 unit. Authorities also uncovered an unregistered firearm and ammunition on the premises.

Now facing multiple charges including felony evading and possession of an unregistered firearm, Mr. Piermartiri has been booked into the John Benoit Detention Center. His prior history of criminal activity is noted with the violation of Post Release Community Supervision terms. While this remains an active investigation, Deputy Ju Yoo of the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station has encouraged those with any pertinent information to come forward.
