A tragic incident unfolded at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills this past Saturday when a parent was fatally shot in the parking lot during a basketball tournament. The school was hosting a junior high school boys’ basketball event when the violence occurred.

reports that the victim, a parent attending the tournament, was targeted in the parking lot by multiple armed suspects who had been waiting in a black Infiniti Q50.
The suspects reportedly blocked the man’s path to his vehicle shortly before 1:10 p.m. as he and his son left the tournament, before shooting him. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared deceased. Authorities have stated that no other injuries were reported from the incident, which appears to be isolated, according to officials. In the wake of the shooting,

, “Our deepest condolences go out to the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.” They noted that an investigation by law enforcement is actively underway and the district is fully cooperating.

In response to the latest traumatic event, Prairie-Hills Elementary School District 144 Superintendent Kinasha Brown assured that all players, staff, and coaches were safe following the shooting; and announced that counseling services would be provided for students and staff when classes resume on Tuesday.
