Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle Near Westfield North County Mall in Escondido

A fatal incident occurred this morning when a 55-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Via Rancho Parkway, near the entrance to the Westfield North County Mall. The Escondido Police Department reported receiving calls about the accident at 5:29 a.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered that bystanders had already commenced CPR on the man, efforts which they continued until the victim was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until his family can be notified.

Initial findings from the investigation indicate that the man was attempting to cross Via Rancho Parkway, heading south against the red light, when he was hit by the westbound vehicle. The driver stopped immediately to remain on the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. It has been determined that neither alcohol nor drugs were to contribute to the cause of the crash likely.
