Pennsylvania Man Sentenced to Two Years for Assaulting Police with Weapon During January 6 Capitol Breach

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a Pennsylvania resident who participated in the January 6 Capitol breach was sentenced to 24 months in jail. Terry L. Allen, a 65-year-old Spring Mills resident, was found guilty of a number of offenses, including felony assault on law enforcement with a weapon during the violent upheaval that rocked American democracy.

Allen’s activities during the chaos that disrupted the congressional session intended to formally announce the 2020 presidential election results led to his conviction for a combination of felony and misdemeanor counts. Before the restricted zone was violated, Allen was captured by the Capitol’s security cameras, which served as mute witnesses, at 12:43 p.m. near Garfield Circle. His physical violence increased during the altercation, as he attacked officers with a flagpole that was used as a spear and even threw a metal bar, according to a Justice Department statement.

Following the ruling of U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta, Allen was sentenced to jail, 24 months of supervised release, and a $1,000 reparation payment. Among other counts, his conviction included the grave offenses of causing public unrest and using physical force within a restricted area.

According to court filings, security footage showed Allen battling with police officers and navigating obstacles at the Capitol. Armed with a metal bar and a wooden flagpole, he seemed poised to strike. He injured at least one cop when he flung the metal bar. As a result, on July 6, 2023, the FBI arrested him.

More than 1,561 people have been charged with offenses connected to the Capitol breach as a result of investigations into the incident nationwide, demonstrating how widely the event was attended. More than 590 people are charged with assault or obstructing law officers, according to the Justice Department.
