A case that lasted more than three years since the horrific incident on June 11, 2021, has come to an end as a Philadelphia jury found three men guilty of first-degree murder in a planned attack that killed two adolescents in West Philadelphia. Rayfiq Tiggle, Tariq Chambers, and Isaiah Jones were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an extra 20 to 40 years in prison for conspiracy, according to the District Attorney’s office, as reported by PhiladelphiaDA.org.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that on the day of the shooting, two teenagers, Nasir Brooks and Steven Griffin, were walking near 55th and Arch Streets when the three men, who had arrived at the scene in a white Nissan Altima, carried out the attack, firing a total of 16 shots at the two victims who died from their wounds on the same street. Police found the involved car on Olive Street shortly after the shooting, and the attackers were taken into custody in December 2022, which led to this week’s punishment.
“Thanks to the Philadelphia Police Department for their very thorough investigation and to Assistant District Attorney Sean Perez for his skillful prosecution of this difficult case, these three defendants no longer pose a threat to the community,” said District Attorney Larry Krasner in a statement obtained by PhillyDA.org, praising the work of the Philadelphia Police Department and Assistant District Attorney Sean Perez for their roles in the investigation and prosecution of this case. Speaking about the city’s larger problem of gun violence, Krasner acknowledged the drop in homicides but emphasized the necessity of ongoing enforcement and preventive initiatives. As ADA Sean Perez stated, “And while this conviction cannot bring Nasir Brooks and Steven Griffin back to life, I hope that these convictions bring some solace to their families.” Although the convictions have ended this specific case, he acknowledged that the loss suffered by the victims’ families cannot be undone.
“It is in fact tragedy all around for the families of all five of those people, who have in one way or another essentially lost their lives,” DA Krasner said in a statement to The Philadelphia Inquirer, acknowledging the tragedy for all the families involved. The lawyers representing Chambers and Jones anticipate appeals, but they have not yet received a response from Tiggle’s representatives.
Tiggle, Chambers, and Jones were at the area when the murders occurred, according to information presented by the district attorney’s office, which CBS News Philadelphia reported. The investigation was supported by an eyewitness tip, video footage, and cell location data. The case that resulted in the recent sentencing was advanced in large part by the quick discovery of the getaway automobile and the connections to a neighboring property that matched the car’s registration.
