Phoenix Community Bands Together to Aid Veterans with Home Repairs Ahead of Veteran’s Day

In Phoenix, known for its strong sense of community, locals are coming together to support veterans ahead of Veterans Day. Volunteers from different backgrounds are working to ensure veterans have safe, stable homes. One group, organized by Habitat for Humanity and Cigna, focused on improving the home of 71-year-old disabled Navy veteran Brian Wallace and his wife, Carmen.

Wallace, who has faced significant difficulties in maintaining their home following a stroke in 2017, expressed his disbelief at the kindness displayed. “You guys are doing a great job here,” Wallace said, “They don’t know me, I don’t know them, but they’re bending over backwards to help me—wow,” according to an

. The critical repairs carried out by volunteers led by Ollie Gunn, included the installation of a new roof, skirting, and a coat of exterior paint, restoring dignity to Wallace’s long-time residence.

Similarly, nearly 100 volunteers from the Home Depot Foundation dedicated their time on November 3 to assist Zakary Ferroni, an Army veteran who served from 2003 to 2012 and was deployed to Afghanistan. The initiative, part of their annual ‘Operation Surprise’, aimed to help Ferroni, who struggles with PTSD, and his husband Joe Schultz, keep their house in order as they contend with the hardships of a single-income household. The foundation’s efforts included organizing the garage, installing new shelving, repairing the fence, and re-landscaping.

Amid the flurry of improvements, Ferroni was also taken aback by a heartfelt surprise. “Before we even bought this house, I wouldn’t of thought any of this would be happening. It’s insane. I love it,” Schultz told
