Phoenix Police Department Releases Details on Officer-Involved Shooting During Burglary Incident

Information about an officer-involved shooting that occurred on November 4th has been made public by the Phoenix Police Department. According to their website, the department warns viewers to exercise caution because the video briefing contains language and graphic material that may be upsetting to some.

The incident started when police were called to a burglary at a house near 15th Avenue and Chipman Road. The victim, who was texting 911, said that an armed suspect was trying to break in and was subsequently spotted leaving in a gray pickup truck. When the authorities got there, they saw the truck parked in front of the victim’s house. The pickup ran away as the officers tried to speak with it, which led to a police pursuit.

Despite orders to disarm, the man raced to one side of a house, dropped one gun, then armed himself with another, pointing it at the officers. The responding officers saw the suspect exit the pickup, drop a firearm, then immediately retrieve it and run toward a nearby home. This marked the end of the pursuit, as the suspect lost control, collided with a wall, and came to a stop.

Officers utilized less-lethal force using a 40mm launcher and a K9 unit in an effort to safely engage the subject. Once the incident was secured, they gave the victim medical attention until the fire crew arrived. But the man passed away at the scene from his wounds. The handguns and a rifle discovered at the scene have been gathered as evidence, and neither officers nor citizens were hurt during the incident.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, both of the involved officers have been with the South Mountain Precinct for more than two and a half years. They are currently being investigated criminally and administratively to see if their actions were in line with department policy and the law. The investigation will be concluded once all the facts have been discovered and the investigation is finished.
