Pickup Truck Fire and Fatal Crash in Penn Township Child Killed, Investigation Continues

DDN – On Friday, a young life was tragically lost on a Berks County road.

“Pennsylvania State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash this morning (that) occurred in the 5900 block of State Route 183,” stated Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Ethan Brownback.

According to state police, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. when a pickup truck and a sedan struck head-on in Penn Township, roughly three miles south of Bernville.

“Unit one was a GMC pickup truck, which crossed the double yellows traveling southbound, hit the unit two, which was traveling northbound,” Brownback told the media. “The operators of both vehicles had to be transported to Reading Hospital via EMS for their injuries.”

The driver was a 27-year-old lady from Reading. Police report that her two-year-old daughter died at the hospital.

According to police, the truck caught fire following the crash, trapping the 55-year-old driver inside.

“It’s something that our first responders have to be very, very careful of and just want to give the proper respect to our fire police and firefighters out there,” said Governor Brownback.

According to police, the pickup’s driver, a male from Auburn in Schuylkill County, is being investigated for DUI as a result of this tragedy.

“Just waiting for the search warrant,” Brownback explained. “We should have more results soon.”
